Mr. E

Description

Another redesign of a forgotten character from the 40's, done for Warren Ellis' Whitechapel forum:

"Mr. E appealed for guidance and assistance to a statue of a ancient tribal god named King Kolah which he housed in a subterranean temple beneath his home. Kolah presented Mr. E with visions that led him to criminals. The idol also gave Mr. E the assistance of his elven messengers. The messengers were small gnome-like creatures who could shapeshift into a variety of creatures and wreaked mischief against Mr. E's enemies. One of the messengers was named Butch. Mr. E used his visions and assistant gnomes to fight crime in Washington DC. Mr. E dated a girl named Miss Terry."

Boy, this was fun to do. This character, a deranged man having visions involving assistant gnomes and statues of ancient gods, seemed so clearly in my mind as being from a Mike Mignola comic, that I actually went and did this humble homage to the man himself.

I think Mignola is a master craftsman and his art is deceptively synthetic... I'd buy any comic drawn by him, even if he did a Smurfs title or something (that's something that makes me sad about Hellboy, he's drawing less and less of it and, no offense to the other talented artists that are filling his shoes, but to me the star of that comic wasn't Hellboy himself but Mignola's art!)

It was hard but also fun as hell to do this, and without further ado, apologies to Mr. Mignola (and to Dave Stewart as well!)

You really captured Mignola's style!
